Next, the myosin head binds to the actin filament at the exposed binding sites, forming a cross-bridge. The myosin head then pivots, pulling the actin filament towards the center of the sarcomere.

This movement causes the actin and myosin filaments to slide past each other, shortening the sarcomere, and causing the muscle to contract. As the calcium ions are removed from the cytosol, the myosin head releases from the actin filament, and the muscle relaxes.
